Hah! Although all our birthdays marking a another year happen but once, my mother, mentioned to me this one had a wee little zing in it.
She had been watching a special on Martin Luther King, Jr., earlier in the day wherein someone being interviewed mentioned it was 63 years ago, in 1963, that Dr. King gave one of his most famous addresses, “I Have a Dream,” on steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
So, yeah, I was born in 1963 and I’m 63 this year.
I didn’t fact-check this “what happened in 1963” sheet, but beyond Dr. King’s speech, AT&T introducing the touchtone phone seemed to be a big change. The annual income was $5,800, a gallon of gas cost $.30, and the ZIP code system was launched.
