Squirreling

The fall season — particularly the mid-point between fall and winter (as noted by Halloween and Día de los Muertos) — always serves to remind me how biological, programmed and seasonal I am. Like clockwork, Halloween marks the beginning of an almost uncontrollable desire to stock up on calories. Suddenly sugars, sweets, high-calorie foods are ultra-attractive. I’ve eaten more sweets (cookies, cake and ice cream) in the last week than I’ve probably eaten in the last three months. And tonight, cheesy fries and chicken wings seemed a good choice. Even when I realized that I’d over-ordered at least twice as much food as I could comfortably eat, I ate it anyway.
