I find it mentally grueling to get motivated to get to my garden plot. Once there, I can be there for hours. No problem.
But growing cucumbers for the first time has me motivated to go more often, as I know they are the kind of fruit that can be invisible and unseen one day and almost inedible and overly large the next.
So, off I went today.
And as expected, there were cukes to harvest. Off of two different plant varieties.
The muncher cucumber (the smaller ones in the pic) are the burpless, tender and supposedly never-bitter ones. I can keep these on the vine longer to reach about nine inches, though I’ve been picking them on the smaller side.
Now, the pickling cukes, the two on the top row in this photo, can be picked at any size, from tiny gherkins on up to those cut into spears. I think this monster one might be too big, but the skin hasn’t turned yellow in any places, so … maybe it’ll be just fine.
I’m also picking my tomatoes at the breaker stage this year, when the lower half has started to turn pink. I heard/read/watched this approach was a better way to get unblemished, not-split, not bug-eaten tomatoes, so I’m giving it a go.

For those wanting an update on The Toad House occupant, looks like we might just have a long-term resident.

And some mystery bug is chomping on the flowers of the Mystery Vine (maybe a melon) that has gone from a tiny little vine into a monster plant taking over a lotta lotta space in my plot.
